WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS...

Congratulations to the University of Warwick for winning BBC University Challenge for the first time ever. They successfully toppled the reigning champions, the University of Manchester, by 30 whole points. Daisy, an English literature student, captained the side which included Harold, economics undergraduate, Rory another English literature student and Prakash, a chemistry student.

For the quarter-finals they were against our alma mater, University of Wales, Aberystwyth. My colleagues knew I was rooting for them. There was a lot of ribbing during tea break but it was all in good fun.

On the top universities 2007 league table published by The Times, Warwick was ranked at number 8. The top belongs to in ranking order : Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, LSE, UCL, Loughborough and Bristol. Aberystwyth was at 46 and Manchester at 26. There were 109 universities on the league table.

To reach the finals, Warwick bested Emmanuel College, Cambridge; East Anglia; Aber; and UCL.
They trashed UCL in the semi-finals by 235points to 86. 28 universities took part in the contest.

It was wonderful when hundreds of students cut short their Easter break to support their counterparts and watch the show on a big screen at Cholo in the Student Union. The champagne must have been flowing. Well done again.

On another note, the Defense Secretary Des Browne must be relieved on his good fortune It was a good day to bury the Navy fiasco: - All the papers and tv channels are now covering the news of the Virginia Tech University massacre. 33 dead and more injured. How can it be a basic right for anyone to own a gun??? How many more deaths? Only in the USA.

The above photograph is the 10,000th image in our digital collection. It shows a coot feeding its chick with a piece of bread that I had thrown in. It was taken by Kevin at one of the lakes in the University grounds. Doesn't it make you go aaah!!!
