Yesterday was the summer solstice. It was the longest day of the year and the time when the sun is at its maximum elevation. The amount of daylight goes down from today...for the next six months. The summer solstice is a time to celebrate the glorious sunny days, the seemingly endless bright days and evenings, to drink in the warmth and to give thanks for the love and light we have in our lives.
It's just too good to be true. It rained and rained. Today, rare summer gales have battered parts of the UK, with storm force winds at sea and gusts reaching more than 60mph on land. We spent the weekend closer to home.
I spent Saturday doing alterations on 2 pairs of pants. It would costs me £12.50 per pair at the tailor to have it shortened and hemmed. Dios!!! The pants only costs me £10 each at TKMaxx. No surprise that people tend just to throw away things that don't fit them anymore.
On Tuesday, I went to my first book club gathering. I'd always wanted to join one but just couldn't find the time. I couldn't turn away from this cos it was about The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman, one of my favourite authors.
One of the members was Shxxxa, who writes under the pen-name Rosalie Warren. Yesterday we went to Borders to say hi cos she was signing copies of her first novel, Charity's Child. Well done.
On Wednesday was the annual May Ball for the students. An excuse for them to dress up and boy, they do dress up. It must cost them a fortune.
Today we braved the gales to checkout the nature reserve. There was a buzz cos someone spotted a European Bee-eater earlier in the morning. It must have been swept by the strong winds. The reserve was also quiet and quite empty. I think the natives are sheltering from the winds and must think we humans are crazy to be out and about. :-). And the terns (above) have hatched.
I forgot to wish Abah Happy Father's Day last week. I called my parents in Malaysia every Saturday.
