On Sunday, we went to Hatton Locks, a series of 21 lock gates, known locally as the 'stairway to heaven' on the Grand Union Canal.
It was an excellent example of Victorian engineering, more than 2 miles, taking the Canal down a drop of 146 feet.
The Grand Union Canal is a collection of 11 canals built at different times by separate companies. It was built to speed up transport between London and Birmingham.
Nowadays, the Canal is used mainly for leisure by anglers, boaters, walkers and cyclists. It was a bright chilly day and everyone is out and about, clearing the winter cobwebs.
I was fascinated with the narrow canal boats moored up the canal. There were people living in them and it must have been very peaceful moving along the countryside at about 4 mph. What a contrast to the hectic and fast life we lead.
NB: Al-fatehah to my childhood friend, Rusni on the death of her mother.
Happy 15th birthday to my niece, Kharmellia.
