...And now the leaves has fallen

And laying on the ground, frozen, covered by frost. Coombe Abbey D2h 19-12-2009 13-09-52 Babe and I lost our mojos since we received that phone call. Life will be on hiatus until … no one knows.

At work, I’m often lost in my own thoughts. I kept myself busy so that my mind doesn’t wander away, thinking of things. But it does own its own accord…

There were 2 retirement parties last week. It was sad to see them go but we gave them a good send-off. The table was groaning with food, nibbles and other tit-bits. Bubblies flowed freely. Xmas came early for some. For William and Betty,

“Now is the time to enjoy all the things you never had time to do when you worked.”

On Thursday was the Staff Open Day. I only attended 3 sessions. DC gave a fascinating talk on the projects for collaborative support for research from the Wolfson Research Exchange.

SH’s proposed plan for staff locations got us in stitches. Will it get the go-ahead or will we stay where we are? We’ve to wait and see… KW gave an insight into the newly-formed Enquiries Support Team. Lots of fresh new ideas and I hoped they worked out.

We also had our first snowfall on that day.  Warwick University FZ28 18-12-2009 10-39-39 My colleagues and I were busy chatting away when suddenly everyone’s gone quiet and eyes looking out of the window. At last, we got some snow but it didn’t last long.

Then it was Black Friday which fell on the Islamic new year 1431. Black Friday or Bleak Friday was the last Friday before Xmas. It was one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants, public houses and nightclubs when Xmas parties hit their peaks. Thankfully, the expected crisis failed to turn up. Probably due to the recession and the extremely cold weather.

The Islamic new year was observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. The significance of this month was the Hijra, or migration, of Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina.Coombe Abbey D50 19-12-2009 13-18-39 Here’s wishing Salam Maal Hijraah to all Muslims. We acknowledged the passing of time and took time to reflect on our own mortality.

On Saturday, Babe and I just need to get out of the casa.  Babe didn’t want to face crowds or meet anyone we knew. So we went to Coombe Abbey and surprisingly, it was deserted. It was soo cold and traces of snow were still visible.

It was soo quiet that the natives cameCoombe Abbey D50 19-12-2009 13-25-51 out to check us out. We observed thrushes scratching among the leaves and squirrels digging for their hoard. It was amazing to see these pigeons flying towards Babe when they saw him coming. I bet they were disappointed when he only had his Nikon on him.

At the bird-hide, all our feathered friends came out to say hello.  Coombe Abbey D2h 19-12-2009 14-00-20 The bird-table was gone and there was tree trunks with holes scattered all over the place. It was a hit with our friends and they were flirting from one trunk to another feeding. What a joy to watch and let us forget for a while.

It’s nearly a week now.

Gone - flitted away,
Taken the stars from the night and the sun
From the day!
Gone, and a cloud in my heart.

~Alfred Tennyson~

Loneliness isn’t just miserable. Coombe Abbey D2h 19-12-2009 14-05-49It’s bad for your body, your mind and it’s contagious. Please take care of your loved ones.
